Apep and Mehen , representing the dualities of chaos and order, are the opponents that accompany the sun god Ra’s night journey into the Underworld. Apep (head downward) devoured the sun and turned day into night. But Mehen (upright) was the fierce protector who could fight off Apep. Success brought the sun each dawn. This happened every night!
